Suitable for people who relish the chance to learn new skills.
If you fight it winter can be a mighty enemy that could break you. If you on the other hand make it your ally and see it's possibilities and exploit it's many qualities, doors will open to opportunities and experiences that you will never get in the summer.
Ice and snow will help you get there, snow will give you comfort and shelter and the low temperatures will keep you dry.
This course is a practical introduction to outdoor life in the Arctic winter and it is suitable for adventurous people of all ages. It is adapted to those who have little or no experience with the Arctic winter and to those who are uncertain about their own skills when it is snowy and cold outside. We will show you how to work with and exploit the winter to your own advantage instead of fighting it as an invincible opponent.
You will be guided you through subjects like navigation by map and compass, necessary equipment, camping, cross country skiing, hazards and crisis situations.
For most of the course you will be outdoors involved in hands on training amongst the beautiful arctic nature that will surround you.
You will be sleeping in a cabin the first two nights and the last night. The three nights in between you will be sleeping in different kinds of tents and in improvised shelters (snow cave or igloo)
Day 1: Arrival, dinner and a briefing about the programme for the week
Day 2: Preparation and basics before a tour
Day 3-6: The great arctic winter experience
Day 7: Breakfast and departure
The course does not require any previous winter outdoor experience but it will be an advantage if you have a little experience from other kinds of outdoor life. We do however require that you are able to carry a backpack (15-20kg) up to 7 km per day in varying terrain. A list of necessary equipment will be issued on request or upon booking.
The trip includes local transportation during the course, 3 nights in a cabin, all meals from dinner on day 1 to breakfast on the day of departure and some of the key equipment required.
