Norway has always been renowned as the land of fjords and this is not least the case in Arctic Norway, a wonderful natural environment where the sea and mountains come together. The Troms region of northern Norway offers a paradise for connoisseurs of natural and traditional winter sporting activities such as off piste skiing, ski touring, dog sledding as well as lovers of the wild and natural environment.
In this region, at a latitude of between 69 and 70 degrees north, over 300 km inside the Arctic Circle and being closer to the North Pole than the country’s capital Oslo, there are also incredible natural phenomena to experience depending on the time of the year one visits – Northern Lights to Midnight Sun. Read more about the amazing light in the Polar North.
There is also a delightful mix of cultures, for it is here where Nordic, Sami and Kven cultures come together as well as the Norwegian seafaring and Arctic exploration traditions and history.
Our boat skiing trips take place in the area around the Lyngen Alps and Kafjord mountains from Ulls Fjord to Lyngen Fjord and the surrounding islands. This area offers a wide range of ski touring opportunities in a most dramatic environment.
For the experienced ski tourer and ski mountaineer there are also plenty of opportunities to summit some of the region’s highest mountains including the highest Jiehkkevarri (1833m) and ski open mountain territory from summits to the sea!
Unlike the more southerly Alpine regions of Europe, in this region the snow conditions are colder and often it is possible to start skiing from sea level – the beach, skinning all the way to a summit before an exhilarating and peaceful descent back to the sea!
Skiing the mountains in this area with the sea and out lying islands as a back drop is without doubt an awe-inspiring experience – it is what ski dreams are made of!
Depending on the group size we offer and range of different vessels from larger steel and wooden vessels to modern 45’ and 37’ sailing yachts. Of course when on a sailing vessel and when weather permits, there will always be a chance to hoist the sails up and sail with the wind to the next ski route.
After each ski route the vessel will take you to another area in preparation for a different route. As a welcome reward after a great days skiing, all vessels have hot showers on board! All hearty meals which befit the type of activity you are doing are included and are cooked on board and in most cases from fresh ingredients – there is also plenty of opportunity to fish for your supper and the fish can be very big up there!
Normally we run trips from February through to the beginning of May. Throughout this period the declination and activities of the sun are continually changing giving one the opportunity to witness and experience the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights though to the Midnight Sun.
Throughout Arctic Norway there are periods of the year when the sun never rises above the horizon and periods when the sun never goes below the horizon.
