Suitable for experienced outdoor people who are looking for something special

This is a special and quite demanding experience to cross the mountain plateau by dog sled.  The coastal weather is very changeable, from bright blue skies with the sun dazzling to horizontal snow blizzards with white all around.  The tour starts from the comforts of the lodge - in the heart of the Sámi culture and heads north, to the remote lodge "Stenbukt" at the Arctic sea.  There are daily stretches of 35 -60 km. The nights will be spent in a tent and may be some nights in cabins.

Tour Itinerary:

Day 1: Tour starts with dinner at the base lodge in Karasjok.  After dinner the guide will give the first briefing regarding the tour.

Day 2: You will be provided with over clothing and the morning is spent getting fitted for snowsuits, boots and other equipment.  Then you will work with the guide organising the teams of huskies and learn the basics of caring for your team and driving the sleds.  The guide will check that mushers are matched with their teams of huskies on a day trip with your "own" team.  You will also have time for a visit to the Sámi Museum in Karasjok.

Day 3 - 8: With your "own" team of 6 dogs, you set the compass north- west and will reach the mountain plateau with the dog teams, the same day - A fascinating landscape, scanty and windswept.  Overnight in tent.

You will cross the largest lake in Finnmark "Jiesjavrre".  The view is endless in all directions and you break your own trail further north-north-west to the valley "Stabbursdalen".   You can expect to spend the night in a small remote cabin, which is situated down in a valley, hidden in the birch forest.

By now mushers and the huskies have usually got to know each other’s ways and the safari can cover a lot of ground.  You will pass close to the upper end of the "Stabbursdalen National Park" to your place for the night.

You go far off the beaten track, breaking your own trail further north-east using the freedom that sled dogs give.  Some great ice fishing can be done in the numerous lakes.

You head north and for the first time you will see the Arctic Ocean and look down at the fjords.  In the evening on day 7 or 8, you reach the cosy lodge "Stenbukt" located in a remote bay right on the sea - no road, - no neighbours.  Great ice fishing is possible in the lakes nearby.

Day 9: A short sled dog trip to the road.  Transfer by car back to Husky Lodge Karasjok.

Day 10: The programme ends at breakfast.
