The Sled Dog Adventure trip is very popular for first-timers.
Three days are spent at the cosy Lodge with day trips and then three days on tour to a mountain cabin. This is a very interesting week spent with sled dogs.
With the lodge as the base for the first four days, you will have two day trips with dog sleds and one day off on you own for visiting interesting local activities. You will then have a three day dog sled tour to a wilderness cabin.
Day 1: The programme starts with dinner. You will then have your first briefing with the guide regarding the tour.
Day 2-3: You will be provided with over clothing and the morning is spent getting fitted for snowsuits, boots and other equipment. Then you will work with the guide organising the teams of huskies and learn the basics of caring for your team and driving the sleds.
After an introduction in dog sledding on the first day you will have your "own" team of 4-6 dogs. On the two day trips you will drive with your guide in varied terrain, and will stop for a lunch break around an open fire. You will have a very close impression of Arctic nature and your guide will share with you his knowledge and love of this nature and this special outdoor-life.
Day 4: Here you have a free day to explore and part-take in some interesting activities. There is always a lot happening on the farm. Horses are in training and puppies are learning to socialise. Many interesting books can be read in the "Dog Musher library". A small tour can be ventured upon alone with snow shoes or you can rent a snow machine. It is even possible to visit a reindeer herd. Local handicrafts and shops can be found at the local Sámi village. The National Sámi Museum and the local knife smith are also worth visiting.
Day 5: Checking that mushers are matched with their teams of huskies you and your guide will start out on a three day tour. By now you and the huskies have usually got to know each other’s ways. After a steep climb up to the mountain plateau you are then mushing over a hilly stretch, crossing lakes and marshes. You will spend these two nights at the wilderness cabin, which enables you to travel light the next day.
Day 6: The area you are dog sledding through is an important winter pasture for reindeers. You can meet the native reindeer herders - the Sámi - in their daily life on their winter pastures.
Day 7: On the long stretch back to Karasjok if you are lucky, you may see moose, as it usually stays in the valley during wintertime. A warm sauna is waiting for you at the Lodge and you will end the week gathered in the warm atmosphere to have a farewell supper.
Day 8: The program ends at breakfast.
