- Categorized in: Karasjok Tours, Tours & Expeditions
An interesting week with sled dogs and other adventure experiences
Your base for the first four days of this trip will be at a husky farm located in Karasjok right in the heart of Sámi land. It will be possible to experience their culture at close hand. You will be accommodated in beautiful log cabins.
The program includes:
A one Daytrip, two open days that is at your own disposal for various interesting activities and a three day tour to a wilderness cabin. You will lead your "own" team of 4 - 6 dogs. You do not need to be exceptionally fit or strong. The guides will match the number of huskies in your team with your strength. If you for some reason do not want to drive your own dog-team, you can ride comfortably wrapped in reindeer skin in the guide's sled. Distances travelled will be approximately 25-40km per day.
Trip Itinerary:
Day 1:
Program starts with dinner. The guide will then give you the first briefing regarding your tour.
Day 2:
You will be provided with over clothing and the morning is spent getting fitted for snow suits, boots and other equipment. Then you will work with the guide organising the teams of huskies and learn the basics of caring for your team and driving the sleds. After this introduction in dog sledding you will have your "own" team of 4-6 dogs.
On the day trip you will drive through varied terrain and will stop for a lunch break around an open fire. With your guide you will be very close to nature and they will share with you their knowledge and appreciation for the natural environment that will surround you.
Day 3-4:
Are open days for your own choice of activities. There is always a lot happening on the farm, puppies are learning to socialise. Many interesting books can be read in the “Dogmusher” library. Smaller tours can be ventured upon alone if desired: Snow shoeing, cross country skiing or walking.
You can book an extra sled dog tour or a tour with a snow mobile. It is even possible to visit Sámi family with their reindeer herd on the plateau or may be take part in a reindeer race. Local handicrafts and shops can be found at the local Sámi village. The National Sámi Museum, guided tour at Norwegian Sami parliament, Sami art gallery, Sápmi theme park and the local knife smith are also worth visiting.
Day 5:
Checking that mushers are matched with their teams of huskies, you will start out on a 3 day tour. By now you and the huskies have usually got to know each other’s ways. After a steep climb up to the mountain plateau you will be mushing over a hilly stretch, crossing lakes and marshes. You will spend these two nights at the wilderness cabin, which enables you to travel light next day.
Day 6:
The area you are dog sledding through now is a winter pasture for reindeers. You may meet the native reindeer herders - the Sámi - in their daily life on their winter pastures.
Day 7:
A long stretch back to the Husky lodge through a variety of beautiful landscapes. If you are lucky, you may see moose, as it usually stays in the valley during wintertime. Dinner gathered in the warm atmosphere of the Husky Lodge will be waiting for you upon your return. There is a cosy wood heated sauna and an outdoor hot tub ready on request for those who are tempted! Maybe with the northern lights above!
Day 8:
The program ends at breakfast.
You may consider staying and extra day at the begining or end of your tour at one of the luxury wood cabins. Please feel free to discuss your requirements.
