The History

The great hotel is a tradition for visitors to Varallo and this tradition lives on in the Albergo Ristorante Italia.  An Ursuline convent until the late 1700s, it has played host to Kings and Princes, the English gentry and the splendours of the Belle Epoque.  The then heir apparent of Savoy Umberto I King of Italy and his brother Amedeo Duke of Aosta honoured this hotel with their presence on 12 and 13 July 1856.  From the honour of regal guests to refined turn-of-the-century tourism, the splendours of the Belle Epoque, the sheltering of soldiers and stabling of animals, the weddings and balls in the Main Hall and the gaiety of traditional carnival celebrations this building takes it place in history.

The Ursuline convent all one with today’s Caffè Roma and of which the cloister is visible, clear signs remain in the architectural detail of the domical vaults and the first floor convent cells are now bedrooms.
