Tromso city

Tromso is the cultural city of the northern Arctic and boasts a long history of Arctic adventure as well as a very significant fishing industry.  During our numerous visits to Tromso, we have been luck enough to have seen and visited some of places which capture the spirit of the past.  If you are fortunate enough to be able to arrange a day during your trip spent in Tromso while waiting for a boat, plane or car to wisk you away, then some of the following may be of interest:

Polar Museum

The Polar Museum is house in a restored wharf-side warehouse dating from the 1830s.  It is in a picturesque maritime setting of old houses with the 1789 Skansen complex next door, the Polar Museum is a pear of old Tromso.  The museum contains exhibits bout the proud Norwegian Arctic history, both trapping and polar expeditions, including the life and time of Amundsen and Nansen.

Polaria

Knowledged-based adventure centre with the themes from Polar Regions.  Panorama film from Spitzbergen, arctic walk, aquarium with arctic wildlife nd live seals.  Exhibits on Arctic research.  Gift shop and café.

The University Museum of Tromso

This impressive museum features Norway’s most extensive exhibits on Sami culture and history.  Nothern Lights exhibit with “northern lights machine”.  Fossils, dinosaurs and earthquakes.  Religious art from 13th centuries.  Arctic Norway – The white fairy-tale. As well as an exhibit on the new Stone age.  Gift shop.

Cable Car (Fjellheisen)

Cable car to Mount Storsteinen (421m), offering a fantastic view of the city.  Indoor / outdoor restaurant.  Gift shop.

Gallery Of Contemporary Art

Established in 1877 and housed in the monumental museum edifice from 1894.  Temporary exhibits of contemporary art with a gallery area of more than 500 sqm.  Art shop (art, crafts, posters, books and postcards). Café.
