Hotel des Glaciers - Dolonne, Courmayeur ★★★

This is a lovely place to stay if you are looking for the peace and quiet of a small traditional family run hotel. Dolonne is the oldest hamlet which falls under the banner of Courmayeur, and from here you can completely avoid the main town centre activity. The hotel was built in 1902 and there are signs of tradition and history throughout.

The hotel is run by Francesca and Alberto (who is also the chef). Originally owned by the family of Alberto, his father was a mountain guide and guardian of the Rifugio Elizabetta for 38 years. There is even a small area of the hotel which has been made into a "guides" museum with original crampons, boots, skis and various other equipment on show.

They used to run the downstairs restaurant as a local cafe/bar and now it is used by residents where they can relax after skiing. There are 17 rooms (17 double/twin rooms, some of these are triple rooms and 1 double room has a view of Courmayeur reachable via a spiral staircase). There is the possibility of adding a third bed into most of the double/twin rooms. Each room has a minibar, TV LCD, safe, hair dryer and WiFi. Three of the rooms are on the ground floor.

Alberto specialises in producing local and regional Italian food and on one evening each week they host a Valdostanna evening. Note they are very relaxed about this and if you have any specific requirements, then please do not hesitate to ask. The Restaurant is also open for outside guests.

The ski run down from Plan Checrouit to La Dolonne runs right above the hamlet of Dolonne and it is easy to drop down and finish within a few minutes walking distance of the hotel. Note also that at the bottom of the ski run, there is also the childrens fun park and cafe where families can enjoy afternoons playing on slope and benefiting from the "tapis roulant" or moving carpets to get up the hill.

The closest lift station is of course La Dolonne, which is a 3 minute walk through the ancient hamlet of Dolonne from the hotel. There is a ski and boot room in the hotel where your equipment can be stored over night.

There is ample parking for anyone arriving by car to the hamlet and Dolonne offers a selection of cafes and bars for you to enjoy apres ski.

Getting there

On arrival into Courmayeur, you come to the infamous crazy round about with the old Courmayeur cable car pods in the middle. From here take the road sign posted La Dolonne. You will go under the road bridge and then cross over another bridge towards Dolonne. Take the left hand turn up to Dolonne and follow the road past the turning to the lift station and around beneath the old hamlet of Dolonne. Towards the top of the road you will see a parking area on your left hand side. The hotel is now behind you on the right hand side.
